Lewis the Cat Who Was Put Under House Arrest

The story of Lewis the cat from Connecticut, whose attacks on neighbors led to a restraining order, Prozac prescription, and international headlines.

Most neighborhood disputes end with a complaint or two. In 2006, one in Connecticut ended with a court order, a prescription, and a cat named Lewis who refused to stay inside.

Lewis was a 5-year-old cat living in Fairfield County, Connecticut, when he started making a name for himself, mostly at ankle level.

According to reports at the time, Lewis had a habit of ambushing people as they walked by his home. Neighbors described him launching surprise attacks on their legs from behind. One of the more memorable incidents involved an Avon representative, who became one of several unwilling participants in Lewis’s routine.

The situation escalated enough that it ended up in court. In 2006, a judge issued a restraining order against Lewis. The ruling required that he be kept indoors, with only limited time outside under strict conditions. It also came with a medical component. Lewis was prescribed Prozac to be taken twice daily in an attempt to manage his behavior.

It seemed like things might settle. But they did not.

Lewis managed to get out of the house and resume his patrols, which led to further complaints. His owner, concerned about the situation and the legal pressure, was eventually arrested for failing to comply with the court’s order to keep him contained.

By then, the story had spread well beyond Connecticut. News outlets picked it up, drawn to the unusual combination of legal action, behavioral issues, and a cat at the center of it all. Lewis became something of an international curiosity, a pet whose actions had crossed into the legal system in a way few others had.

After the court case, stricter measures were put in place to keep him indoors. The incidents stopped, and the neighborhood returned to normal.

While the court case made headlines, Lewis was a cat doing what cats do, his own thing.
