Meko the Opera Dog
Daniel shares the story of Meko, his calm, very vocal Alaskan Malamute whose “opera performances” have reached people far beyond his home.
Before Meko became known online as the Opera Dog, he was simply a very large, very vocal Alaskan Malamute with strong opinions about music, routine, and being left at home. The discovery happened almost by accident. One afternoon, Daniel returned home from work to find a neighbour waiting by the gate.
“I think your dog is actually singing to me,” she told him.
Certain songs, it turned out, were setting Meko off, not barking, not noise, but something almost melodic. When Hallelujah came on, he would begin to howl along as if he were part of the orchestra. That moment marked the beginning of what would eventually become Meko’s unlikely online presence.
We spoke with Daniel about life with Meko, the reality behind the opera performances, and how something has come to mean more than he expected.
How Meko started singing
Meko started howling almost from the beginning. Like most Malamutes, he has strong opinions about things, including his precious bed and the fact that I have the audacity to go out to work to keep a roof over his head.
Before leaving for my job as a car paint sprayer each morning, I’d put Classic FM on so the dogs had a bit of company. One day I came home at lunchtime, and a neighbour was waiting by the gate. She smiled and said, “I think your dog is actually singing to me.”
Apparently, certain songs were setting him off, and when Hallelujah came on, he’d start this soft, melodic howl. Not barking, not noise, it genuinely sounded musical.
That was the moment I realised Meko wasn’t just complaining at all. He thought he was singing with an orchestra.
And that’s how Meko the opera dog was accidentally discovered.
When Meko is off camera
To the outside world, Meko might look like a full-blown opera star, and in his mind, he probably is. Dramatic, emotional, singing his heart out. In reality, he’s actually very relaxed. He’s my big, gentle, cuddly giant.
Most of the day, he’s incredibly calm. He sleeps a lot, lounges around, and is generally just very chilled. He’s definitely not a needy dog. He likes his own space and always loves knowing his pack, me, is close by.
Occasionally, he’ll keep life interesting by playing an unexpected game of hide-and-seek with me in the woods.
The funny thing is, he’s not dramatic in everyday life. All that theatrical energy only appears when the right piece of music comes on.
Then suddenly he transforms… and out comes his inner Paworotti.

A typical day with Meko
A normal day with Meko is normally much calmer than people imagine.
Most of the time, he’s just this enormous fluffy dog quietly observing what is going on. The day starts with a stretch, a bit of Malamute "talking," and sometimes a small howl just to announce that the morning has officially begun.
Then we go for a walk, which he treats like a neighbourhood inspection. He likes to check everything, greet people, and make sure the world is still in order.
When we get home, he mostly relaxes. Malamutes are surprisingly good at lounging! He’ll sleep, watch what I’m doing just to keep an eye on his pack.
But when his music comes on, he definitely has his songs, you can literally see the moment he decides to "wake up" the inner opera singer. His head tilts, he listens… and then boom, the howl comes out.
So most of the day he’s a calm, fluffy giant… and then suddenly you’ve got a full Malamute opera performance in the living room.
Sharing Meko online
The most surprising thing has honestly been how far it’s travelled and how many people it seems to reach. When you first share something like this online, you never imagine people all over the world watching your dog sing.
But what’s been even more humbling is the messages people send. Quite a lot of people say that Meko’s singing gives them a moment of joy or helps them through a difficult day.
That’s something I never expected at all. It’s just a big Malamute howling along to music, but somehow people seem to find a bit of comfort or healing in it.
If my fluffy dog singing opera can make someone smile for a minute, that’s a pretty wonderful thing.
It’s overwhelming, in the best possible way.

Going through difficult times
That’s probably one I’d have to circle back to properly, because it isn’t really just about the GoFundMe.
The truth is the last five years have had quite a few ups and downs, and there’s a bigger story behind that which takes a bit more explaining.
What I will say is that through all of it, having Meko beside me has made a huge difference. Dogs have an incredible way of grounding you. No matter what’s going on in life, he still needs his walk, he still wants his routine, and he still decides to burst into song when the right piece of music comes on.
In difficult periods, that kind of presence matters more than people realise. He brings a bit of humour, a bit of calm, and sometimes a reminder to just stop and breathe for a moment.
And in a strange way, sharing those moments with people online has turned something quite personal into something that seems to help other people too.
Sometimes that light comes in the form of a very large Malamute singing opera called Meko!
Meeting Meko in person
If someone met Meko in person for the first time, the first thing they’d probably say is, "Wow… he’s big." Then it’s usually, "Wow… he’s fluffy." And then after a few minutes, people realise something else: he’s incredibly calm.
For such a big dog, he’s surprisingly gentle and relaxed. People often say, “I can’t believe he’s exactly the same as he is online.”
And the truth is, he really is. What you see on the screen is pretty much what you get in real life. A huge, fluffy Malamute with a soft personality… who just happens to sing opera from time to time.
At the end of the day, what started as a dog howling is still just me and a very large Malamute who thinks he’s an opera singer. The only difference now is that somehow it’s being shared with people all over the world.
