Opo the Friendly Dolphin of Opononi
The wild dolphin who adopted a town in the summer of 1955.
Wild dolphins usually steer clear of humans, but Opo was totally different.
In early 1955, a young bottlenose dolphin started following fishing boats into the harbor at Opononi, a little town on New Zealand's North Island. At first, everyone thought she was a boy and nicknamed her "Opononi Jack," after another famous dolphin named Pelorus Jack. Turns out, they were wrong, and she became known as Opo.
Unlike most wild dolphins, Opo was super curious about people. She would swim right up to the children. She even played with beach balls and empty bottles. She came back day after day, just like an old friend visiting the town.
Opo turned into a local superstar real quick. Families would drive for hours just to see the dolphin everyone was talking about. The once quiet harbor suddenly became one of New Zealand’s hot summer spots.
Some Māori families believed Opo might be a messenger connected to Kupe, the legendary Polynesian navigator.
As Opo got more popular, people started worrying about her safety. The locals pushed for legal protection, and in March 1956, she became one of the first wild dolphins in New Zealand to get that protection.
But sadly, it came just a day too late. Opo was found dead near Koutu Point. What really happened has never been completely figured out. Her time in the town lasted just over a year, and her death hit New Zealand hard. She was buried with Māori honors overlooking the harbor that she had made famous.
These days, you can see a statue of Opo by the waterfront in Opononi. There are books, films, and songs about her. Generations of New Zealanders grew up hearing the story of the dolphin that decided to hang out with a small harbor full of people for one amazing summer.
Some places get popular because of historic events that happened there, but Opononi became famous because a wild dolphin kept coming back.
