It's Jimothy Summer

How one little raccoon became everyone's little guy.

Every summer brings something new. Sometimes it's a catchy song, other times it's a movie or two. This year? We got Jimothy, a raccoon.

Over the past few weeks, Jimothy has found his way into everyone's hearts. He's popped up on T-shirts and coffee mugs, and artists are drawing him in all sorts of styles. Brands are jokingly putting him on their products, and somehow he’s turned into a source of life advice for many people: "Jimothy believes in you." "Do it for Jimothy." "I'm just a trash panda doing my best."

No one really planned for this. There wasn’t some big announcement declaring Jimothy the mascot of summer. No campaign or official account guiding the buzz. People just started talking about him as if everybody already knew who he was.

What's cool about Jimothy is that he’s not flashy at all. He doesn't perform tricks or stand out for any big reasons. He’s just a scruffy little raccoon with a short spine wandering around Seattle neighborhoods, and becoming the internet's favorite little raccoon.

So why him? Maybe it’s because Jimothy doesn’t come with a set backstory. Everyone gets to add in a little something.

Everyone's little guy

We’ve all had unofficial mascots in our neighborhoods. There’s the cat that feels like it belongs to everyone on the block, or the dog everyone says hi to during morning walks. Jimothy is kind of different. A mailman posted on a subreddit: "I deliver mail in the Seattle area and kept seeing some familiar names popping up on videos of Jimothy. I had a strong suspicion he lived on my route and I was right: I finally saw him!"

Sure, he’s part of a real place, but he doesn’t belong to a zoo, a museum, a baseball team, or a brand. There’s no official account dictating what he should stand for. That freedom lets people shape him however they want. They’re not just sharing photos and videos; they’re coming up with catchphrases, creating fan art, and making merch. He’s become this character that feels both unique and relatable.

Available to mean anything

Maybe that’s why Jimothy can represent so many different things. For some people, he’s a reminder to keep pushing through. For others, he’s just a quirky raccoon navigating life. Some see him as a symbol of resilience, while others find him just plain funny. None of these interpretations take away from the others because Jimothy wasn’t meant to be just one thing.

He’s open to being hopeful, funny, weird, and comforting. In between the jokes and drawings, people have built this character together.

Long live the innocent mascot

Every now and then, we end up with a mascot like Jimothy, not because they want to inspire us or because they’re amazing, in fact, they are incredible. It's because they show up at just the right time and let us project a bit of ourselves onto them. Maybe that’s what makes Jimothy feel special. He’s not trying to sell us a brand or push a movement; he’s just a little raccoon living his life, and his story has turned into ours.
