Moeshit: Puppies in the Garden, Ghosts on the Canvas

In conversation with artist Moeshit about a stray dog named Nugget, three surprise puppies, and the restless energy that fuels his work.

Nugget the dog first showed up in the garden like a little thief. She stole shoes, slippers, and attention, tugging them all back into her orbit. Mischievous, loyal, impossible to ignore. Then one day she vanished, slipped into the bushes with something small in her mouth, leaving silence where her noise used to be. The next morning, the cries of newborn puppies broke the quiet. Nugget had become a mother, and Moeshit, the artist who had taken her in, found himself with a new responsibility. To care for them, he turned to the thing that had always carried him: his art.

We first came across Moeshit's work through a tweet our friend Pablo shared about Nugget, the stray-turned-mother in Moeshit's garden. That mix of tenderness and raw energy drew us in. And now Moeshit joins us to talk about his story, his influences, and what he’s making next.

A little bit about me

I'm Moeshit, a game developer, cartoonist, painter and musician. As a kid, I was fascinated by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Batman, and Pokémon universes.

I think I found what I wanted to do in kindergarten, when no one wanted to draw with me because my drawings had dark and grotesque themes. I started playing guitar and writing songs in high school, and started developing games when I was 30.

The story of Nugget

My girlfriend wanted us to move to the countryside to repair kitesurfing equipment, and I agreed. In the place where we live—we live in a complex with a large garden, there are many stray dogs, hedgehogs, and cats, and they are all peaceful. Nugget was abandoned in our garden by her owner :(

Nugget was a really naughty dog, she would constantly steal my shoes and slippers and wanted to play with everyone. She loved me very much.

One day, I noticed her breasts were prominent and I realized she was pregnant, but the interesting part is that she suddenly gave birth. And the other day, with something that looked like a mouse in her mouth, she ran to the bushes next to our house and entered a very narrow space. I was surprised that the entrance was so narrow.

Because Nugget would sometimes come to our house with animals she had hunted in her mouth, so I thought it might be one of them. But when I heard the sound of babies in the morning, I was sure she was a mother. She was normally very social, now she was nowhere to be seen. I thought she had died and I was worried. Then one day, I saw her and realized I needed to take care of her and her babies, and I started my card project called MOK. Something like this was necessary so that all the income could go to Nugget and her babies.

Humans, animals, and everything in between

I studied archeology and thought deeply about these issues. My humble opinion is that, as conscious beings, humans are very jealous of animals because they are self-sufficient creatures that do not ask for much from life. Of course, there are animals that are off topic, but I think we have a hate-love relationship towards them. I think animals are very inspiring too. I love them so much; I wish I could do more.

Balancing spontaneity and intention

I'm always thinking, and I'm a perfectionist. So much so that I start walking, and as I walk, I see sad people, happy people, ever-changing seasons, dead animals, live animals, old people, and children.

Life is fragile and short and miraculous, so my plans fail and my emotions get the better of me, and this bullshit ensues.

The one piece that I want people to check out

It makes me happy for people to see my pieces, but not a single piece expresses me. I'm still alive and I'm not worried about being someone, I'm experiencing this world and I want a peaceful and meaningful life without hurting anyone until I die. I think those who want to know me will see themselves in me, I'm right there right now.

We thank Moeshit for sharing his story with us. You can follow him on X/Twitter, and check out his card game MOK.
