Liam Gallagher, Sid, Nancy and Buttons

Liam introduced Sid to his Twitter followers in 2018, followed by Nancy a few months later. Their names make a fairly obvious pair: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Both came from Wood Green, The Animals Charity.

The cats don’t show up on Liam’s Twitter much these days, but we do know something about their domestic habits. In 2022, when The Guardian asked Liam what scared him; he admitted to spiders and mice. And Sid and Nancy weren’t helping. The cats, he explained, were always bringing mice into the house as presents. Liam understood the gesture. He just couldn’t handle the gift.

In 2023, dog rescuer Niall Harbison was going through applications for a street dog named Buttons when one caught his attention. The applicant was Liam Gallagher. Harbison assumed someone was winding him up. Then he reached the line asking for the applicant’s occupation. It said “singer.”

Well, the details checked out. After an interview with Liam and his partner Debbie Gwyther, Buttons had a home waiting for her in Britain.

Buttons had been abandoned in the jungle on the Thai island of Koh Samui. Harbison said she began appearing at his sanctuary on her own, returning day after day and slowly befriending the people and dogs there. She was the only dog, he later said, who had effectively invited herself in. (ITV News)

After several months of foster care, she was ready to leave Thailand. Getting to Liam’s home required a journey of around 10,000 kilometers by boat, ferry and plane. When she finally arrived, Buttons immediately made friends with the humans. And, fortunately, the cats.

Buttons quickly became a much bigger part of Liam’s life than another famous person’s dog. When asked in 2024 whether an Oasis reunion tour might happen, Liam joked that it depended on whether he could get a dog sitter. (NME)

He also said he was reluctant to tour America because he didn’t want to leave Buttons behind. (Radio X)

For a man who had spent decades traveling the world to play music, there was apparently now someone at home worth rearranging the schedule for.

The relationship eventually helped the place Buttons had come from, too. In 2024, Liam donated the giant globe used during his Definitely Maybe tour to Manchester’s Co-op Live. The venue made a £25,000 donation to a charity of his choice. (NME)

He chose Happy Doggo, the organization behind Buttons’ rescue. And the money went toward a hospital for street dogs in Thailand. So the dog who traveled halfway around the world to live with Liam Gallagher ended up sending something home. Sid and Nancy, meanwhile, appear to have contributed mice, but we’re sure they’re very good kitties.
